What is theistic existentialism? What is the meaning of existentialism's lack of popularity? Heidegger, a former student of theology, became a philosopher, who hid God in obscure language. There is embarrassment in admitting that we are interested in God. Gabriel Marcel (French Catholic Philosopher); In psychiatry and medicine God is totally absent; We call theistic existentialism Metapsychiatry, which means beyond psychiatry; We study the relevancy of God consciousness to mental health and healing; Breathing life into the valley of dry bones; Experience has proven the approach very helpful. Scientific approaches to understanding man; Definition of a specialist; Man exists in the context of God and may not be understood outside of his context. Maple tree and leaf analogy; God is the creative power and intelligence that sustains man. Psychiatry does not study man; it studies man's sicknesses. Metapsychiatry's primary interest is in understanding healthy man. Under what conditions can man be healthy? Operationalism is just looking how to handle man, as an object; Humanism is looking to make man more capable of exiting in groups, he moralizes man; (I can get along with my fellow man by wanting to.) Being generous (humanistic) to be nice. Juan Xa sage; When the Wrong Man does the right thing, the right thing goes the wrong way.

Young lady case: Admiration vs. Love; Admiration is self-confirmatory and pathogenic (if feels good, but you can't get enough); Love is God-confirmatory and is health promoting (Love is an appreciation of the essential qualities of an individual, so it reinforces the awareness of the good of God in an individual.) Love provides us a genuine sense of self worth. Self confirmatory ideation vs. Self worth (Healthy self-esteem); Seeing the problem (Psychotherapy) vs. Seeing the meaning of the problem (Metapsychiatry = 1st "R"); Problems can appear to be very serious and difficult to deal with; Cause vs. Ignorance; Finding a cause makes a problem real; Children manifest the mental climate of the home; What is ceaseless prayer? Ceaseless prayer is learning to see everything in the context of divine love intelligence, maintaining a transcendent perspective. Phenomenological perceptivity: open minded confrontation with that which reveals itself from moment to moment; the open mind requires a wide mental horizon, one uncluttered by preconceptions, prejudices and calculative thinking. As therapists, all we are doing is maintaining an open mind and awaiting for the meaning to reveal itself. The therapist can not heal. The therapist can do nothing. The Truth heals. The therapist is a medium via which the truth can reach the patient's consciousness. Healing is grace manifest. What satisfaction is there in being a psychotherapist? Seeing God in action; Seeking ego gratification from our work; The metapsychiatric therapist seeks the joy of beholding, seeing God in action.

What is the meaning of the tendency to think in terms of feelings? We think feelings are primary. Psychotherapeutic Errors: If you feel right, you will be healthy. By changing your behavior you can be healthy or by changing your feelings you can be healthy. We cannot change our feelings. Behavior and feelings are by-products of our thought processes (epiphenomenon). Our mode-of-being is determined by our thought processes. Thought processes are determined by our perceptions, how we see things. Perceptions are determined by our values and preconceptions. It is not true that we can see what is going on. We see our thoughts or somebody else's' thoughts. We interpret what we see. Bible: As man thinketh in his heart, so he seeth. As thou seest, so thou beest. Buddha: We are what we think, having become what we have thought. The aim of Metapsychiatry is to help people see better. We see with our thoughts. Valid thoughts. What makes sense? What fits in with our preconceived ideas. Source of thoughts. Man does not produce thoughts. Mental climate. Intelligent and valid ideas come from divine mind. Intelligent and valid ideas come to us through inspiration. Invalid thoughts come from the "sea of mental garbage". Noosphere. (culture, civilization, education, history = preconceptions.) Firmament is the separation between valid and invalid ideas (Ocean of Love Intelligence and Sea of Mental Garbage) Three R's (Recognition, Regret, Reorientation)

Inspired man is different from a computer. Spontaneous: Sponte Tua = Out of thy will. Illnesses can be fashionable. When an idea becomes prevalent in our environment, we become afraid of and our fear energizes the idea, giving it power to manifest. "That which I fear most has come upon me." The better we understand things, the simpler they get. Children are influenced by three factors in parental consciousness: 1) What you cherish; 2) hate; 3) fear. Healthy parenting is impossible, based on good intentions and self sacrificing love, unless you understand the three elements of consciousness. In order to be healthy, we must cherish that which is existentially valid and we must be compassionate enough to be free of hate and we must seek to be fearless. How can we become fearless? Perfect love casteth out fear. He that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him, for God is love.

Psychosomatic Medicine – Psychosomatic means a physical illness brought on by a mental state – Somatopsychic perspective pain/illness => emotional disturbance – High emotional states may result in physical reactions that in-turn manifest in physical illness/structural damage – “the good that I would I do not, but the evil which I would not, I accomplish” – It is common to deny that physical symptoms have any thing to do with mental states – Example: spinal fusion for spinal arthritis; willfulness = should thinking; conflicts with grandchildren; try not to think about what should be and what shouldn’t be; don’t insist on anything; watch thoughts; watch words; become completely “shouldless”; 2 weeks later, the patient is healed and three years later there are no symptoms – Emotions are not the culprit in psychosomatic medicine, modes-of-being-in-the-world, which comprises the way an individual perceives life, its values and what its habits of thought are, are the culprit – Mind and body are not separate entities – the body is the mind and the mind is the body – mind manifests itself as thought, emotion, symptoms, and physical structures – thoughts vs. emotions.

The mind and the body are one. There is no separation. Metapsychiatry treats modes of being in the world. Adjustment is an operational function it can be done. Adaptation can be done. Lifestyles are chosen. Modes of being in the world are expressions of our basic assumptions values and education/culture which produce the way we see life. How can we understand an individual's Mode of being in the world? A: Phenomenological analysis: the analysis of what seems to be. Everything that happens to us on life has a meaning. What is a meaning? A: The mental equivalent of a phenomenon, of what appears to be. A headache is a phenomenon. He that seeks reasons only finds excuses. We are not interested in causes of phenomena but in the meaning of phenomena. A meaning is always a thought that underlies a particular phenomenon. Nothing causes physical symptoms, but a thought can take on the form of a physical symptom. We seek the meaning of a phenomenon with patients. If the mind and the body are one, the mind cannot cause a headache, but a thought can take on the form of a headache. Transcending cause and effect reasoning. Language is a language and our habits of thinking interpret reality. Interpretation vs. phenomenological discernment. When we discern a meaning we see what a patient thinks really is. After we identify the meaning, the symptom will get worse, with a trace of humility will come embarrassment. What is healthy?

When we have learned the existentially valid mode of being in the world, we will be healed of our problems. Because our Mode of being in the world is in harmony with the fundamental order of existence, as defined by God Love/Intelligence. Sanity is living in harmony with Love/Intelligence. We have certain manners of thinking, which may manifest in psychosomatic disturbances. Problems are lessons designed for our edification. Problems help us learn to live more intelligently. There are grave conditions where the meaning is so obscure, or when the patient is so deeply involved in the situation, that there is no way of approaching the problem via phenomenological analysis, leaving only the traditional ways of alleviating the suffering, as unsatisfactory as they may be. The more we can learn to live in harmony with the fundamental order of the universe, the more protection we obtain from the common inflictions suffered by most of humanity. Everything has a meaning, though not all meanings may be discerned. If a patient is ready to face a meaning and if there is the humility to face up to the meanings, the problem can disappear, though the realization of spiritual reality. One surgery is commonly followed by another, because the problem though alleviated, is not solved, until it is understand what the problem came to teach. Medicine knows well that there is no direct relationship between a bacterial invention and the manifestation of the disease. There is an intermediate step, which is called receptivity. The question is where does receptivity come from?

Case #1: We must first discern the meaning of the problem and help the patient understand the meaning, regret, and then reform their ideas. In every case of depression, there is a sense of loss (thing, person, idea, place that we are attached to). Depression Symptoms. The patient must understand that she is not suffering from depression. She is just overreacting to the loss of something for which she over-estimates its importance to her own happiness and survival. Patient must realize that she has not lost something vital, but something that she has overestimated the value of. The problem is the attachment. You cannot lose yourself. “The aim of the process of enlightenment is to felicitously lose yourself.” We must clarify the attachment and then the patient must realize that she is suffering from a mistaken idea. Then she must regret the mistake. With sufficient regret, we become willing to reform our thoughts, which produces a change in the patient’s mode of being in the world and a true healing, takes place. When we are regretful we have found something; when we are depressed, we have lost something. Psychosomatic Case #2: Bronchial Asthma Emphysema symptoms. Three R’s. Seek meaning of most significant problem. What is the patient’s mode of being in the world. She is suffocating (oppression/chronic resentfulness/ frustration). Can not be expressed verbally, so is expressed as asthma. What determines the choice of the symptom? A: What ever is fashionable in society or in a family. Thought is mental energy and may transmute itself into symptoms. What is a phobia? A: A fear of losing control, which presumes that one should have control. Therapist must discern meaning, help patient see meaning and help her assume responsibility for the problem, without blaming anyone else. Help her regret her mistaken assumption, that others are making her sick.

Therapist must discern meaning, help patient see meaning and help her assume responsibility for the problem, without blaming anyone else. Help her regret her mistaken assumption, that otters are causing her to be sick. The moment we have someone to blame, we become incurable, because our healing depends on someone else changing. If we want to be healed, we must assume responsibility for our own sickness. We cannot blame ourselves either. Three R’s. It is not inevitable for us to live in chronic rage. Diathesis, diseases that run in families. Choice of symptom is based on hypnotism. Three approaches to hypnotic suggestion: seduction, provocation, and intimidation. Immunity to hypnotism comes from God consciousness. Two modes of thought: Calculative thought vs. inspired wisdom. Calculative thinking is based on the illusion that man can produce thoughts and figure things out by himself. Inspiration: Creative intelligence obtaining in receptive consciousness from an infinite source of love intelligence. God inspired ideas. Enlightened man knows that he doesn’t produce thoughts. Thoughts obtain in consciousness. Calculative mind is like a computer. The programmer is our experience. Enlightened man’s programmer is God.

Futile questions: Why am I afraid and what I am afraid of? There are millions of explanations, but being able to explain something, doesn't mean we really understand it. Example: "Drawing a blank in a psychotherapy session" = fear. What is the meaning of resistance to the therapist? Traditional psychotherapy is an intrusion into an individual's personal life. Medical model: The patient is an object. The doctor has the professional privilege of violating the integrity of the object in order to benefit the patient. The patient resists because individuals don't like to be violated. Resistance occurs when a therapist is treating a disease or the person. Instead, we treat MOBITW for which there need be no need to resist. Example: Steamroller Attorney. Resistance is replaced with a desire to find a better way. Jesus Christ models the existentially valid way, the better way, the qualities and values Jesus taught the world are available to anyone to contemplate and accept as a better way. Treating MOBITW, presses the patients integrity. In order to become fearless we must understand the meaning of fear. Fear comes from a habit of being concerned for ourselves. How am I feeling and how am I doing? The more concern we have, the more intimidating experiences we are likely to encounter => anxiety neurosis.

Introduction to Metapsychiatric therapy — how it works and how it can be helpful to a clearer understanding of life — Eleven Principles — Operational vs Existential — existence: area of life that cannot be done — not psychotherapy; way of learning to see — seeing what really Is — phenomenal world vs what really is — appearances vs spiritual reality — “as thou seest so thou beest” — levels of perception — see thoughts about reality vs seeing reality —imagination vs reality — what is insanity? — need for openminded discernment of spiritual qualities and spiritual values — undefiled consciousness is known as “emptiness” in Zen — no such thing as creative imagination — can received creatively inspired ideas — in Metapsychiatry learning the openminded confrontation of reality—death of the thinking; death of ego; death of illusion of capacity to think — the thinker is in a state of normal insanity — everything we know in Metapsychiatry comes from Taoist philosophers; Zen masters; Hebrew prophets or Jesus Christ—expand seeing from seeing with thoughts to seeing with open mind with spiritual discernment; to see with the spirit—Meister Eckart “I see God with the same eyes as God sees me”— story of Yen Hui — the art of mind-fasting.

Continuing with story of Yen Hui—illusion of being a thinker died in him—sees himself as transparency for divine love-intelligence; infinite wisdom— as we even approach clearer seeing our lives improve in all aspects—no techniques in Metapsychiatry, do have methods—"when you know what you know how”—when we know what the problem is then we know how to proceed—Two intelligent questions—Six futile questions—there are no problems but there seem to be many problems—that which is cannot be changed, healed or altered—reality is immutable, so problems only seem to be—experience of problems can be healed by seeing what really is.

What is good about seeing what is not visible? “Look not upon the things that are seen, but upon the things that are not seen (Paul)”. The qualities of God are not seen. “As thou seeist so thou beist”. By learning to see the unseen, we become transformed and are redeemed. Our senses give us information about form and formlessness. That which is tangible is form. That which is intangible is formless. Form is formlessness and formlessness is form. Both are parts of the material world and can be perceived with our senses. A table has form and the color green has no form. Seeing relates to the five senses, and beyond. Skin sees form and texture. Ears see sound and the direction of sound. Perception is the ability to see with our senses. Perception leads to judging by appearances. Why is it so difficult to become enlightened? It is difficult, because we have to learn to see beyond perception, to reality.
Cognition is seeing with our intellect. As we grow, we develop preconceived ideas about what should be and what shouldn’t be. These ideas take over our faculty of seeing, so we don’t see what is, but instead we see what we think is. Visualization gives us ideas of what should be. The more we practice visualization/imagination the less we see what really is. The same is true of imagination. Empathy, Empathy, Antipathy, Telepathy and Intuition are all way of seeing unreality and so are not helpful. “God is spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” Spirit is nonmaterial substance. Describing spirit, Jeasus said to Nicodemus: “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” The seeing, with our perception, is just there to provide contrast to that which really is. What we see is the phenomenal world. “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” Spiritual discernment is a different way of seeing, we call it awareness. How can the true individual be seen?

Ordinarily we are so distracted by what we perceive with our senses, that we cannot see spiritual qualities. Everyone is manifesting spiritual qualities, whether they know it or not. Spiritual discernment allows us to perceive spiritual qualities in everyone leading us to the development of the faculty of beholding, being able to see the good of God everywhere. The prayer of beholding is the most powerful prayer there is. A beneficial presence is a focal point for harmony and healing. We cultivate personal mind power throughout our lives and we are reluctant to give it up. The more successful we have been, with personal mind power, the less likely we are to wish to give it up, the more insane we become. Heidegger distinguishes between calculative thinking and inspired thought. The human condition is inevitable, but it not necessary. We have to outgrow the illusion of a personal mind, in order to become a transparency for divine mind. The path consists of seven steps: perceptivity, cognition, empathy, telepathy, intuition, spiritual discernment, and beholding. What is the value of knowing these markers? If you have a clear understanding the process of spiritual development, you will not fall victim to ideas that distract us from the process of spiritual development. Man is an image and likeness of God, so the meaning and purpose of his life is to become a transparency through which God can manifest himself in the world, through the qualities of love-intelligence, creativity, and PAGL. The unseen is the real and the seen is the unreal. Spiritual discernment vs. Beholding. Spiritual discernment is a way to become a beholder. It is a way to become aware of God’s infinite presence. The problem with hypnotism is that we are susceptible to it. How do hypnotists work? How do we see the spiritual dimension, in contrast to the phenomenal world. Before I took on the study of Zen, mountains were mountains and rivers and were rivers. After I was deeply involved in the study of Zen mountains were not mountains any more and rivers were not rivers anymore. But, after I became enlightened mountains were mountains again and rivers and were rivers. This story speaks about the development of the capacity to see. We start naïve: we judge by appearances. What you see is what you get. We become sophisticated: intellectual, speculative, labeling and interpreting. We don’t see what is in a sensory way, but in terms of ideas, but this way is no more real. When we become enlightened, we see with an innocent eye: we see with purity of consciousness, we see reality in the context of spiritual values. Real art portrays what the innocent eye sees.

The human race has been committing suicide for centuries. The human race seems to suffer from a cognitive deficiency. We don’t see. We need to learn to see (spiritual discernment). Until we cam see, we will continue to commit suicide, because we are like blind man that think they can see. We think we are human beings. We are spiritual beings. We have the ability to see the unseen (spiritual discernment). Spiritual discernment begins where we understand that form is formlessness and formlessness is form. Spiritual values/qualities have neither form nor are they formless. Spiritual discernment starts when we discover the futility of seeing form and formlessness and discover our interesting in seeing God. Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity. God is where we go when all else fails. Metapsychiatry is a road map to God. It can keep you on track. Psychic healing and medical cures are counter hypnotism. We don’t utilize principles, we seek to realize them and live by them. We seek to be influential, but do not seek to influence. We consider influence a trespass. We all believe we are thinkers. Thinkers think they can produce thoughts. It is an illusion. We just think that we are thinkers. God is the only thinker. How do we know? We are aware of thoughts. We are individual units of awareness. God is infinite awareness. We have the power to focus our attention on one thought or another. We can be aware of the invalidity or validity of thoughts. Thoughts obtain in consciousness, seemingly from nowhere. In order to have an open mind, the thinker must die. Ideas transmute themselves into action/behavior/other expressions. The more open minded we become, the easier life becomes. Rodin’s The Thinker’s despair is contrasted to The Buddha’s joy. The Buddha is an innocent consciousness. Invalid thoughts come from the sea of mental garbage. Where is the sea of mental garbage? It does not exist. It is not real. How do we know what is valid? The seven steps to development of the faculty of spiritual discernment function like signs on the road. It appears that the meaning and purpose of life is to come to know Reality. Reincarnation. It is the spirit of God, within us, is that which can discern the difference between valid and invalid ideas. Consciousness/life is a gift of God. How do you know what God wants? All human suffering stems from two things: What we want and what we don’t want. We are not here to pursue what we want/don’t want. We are here to pursue what God wants. God wants to be manifest in the world. It is the nature of God to manifest itself in its universe. We manifest God, when we manifest spiritual values. The Bible is absolutely correct when it says that Man is an image and likeness of God.

Metapsychiatry was born on the day that it became clear that Man is the image and likeness of God. If man lives in accordance with this fundamental order of reality, then he will spare himself a great deal of suffering. God I constantly manifesting himself. If we are receptive and responsive to these ideas, then all things will go well for us. How do you get rid of a thought of a pink elephant:? We don’t have to get rid of thoughts; we just have to lose interest in them. Principal #1: Thou shalt have no other interests before the good of God, which is spiritual blessedness. The parables of Jesus are teaching methods to assist individuals realize things that can not be imagined. To assist us to get beyond form and formlessness to see spiritual values. Beholding is a special state of consciousness where things are seen with the inner eye in the context of Infinite-Love-Intelligence. Substance of spirit reference to tape ???. Insight. Three modes of being in the world: We can be here for ourselves. We an be here for others. We can be here for God. When we are receptive, the right ideas obtain in consciousness. If we don’t understand that we live in the Ocean of Love-Intelligence, then we live in the Sea of Mental Garbage. Maslow and childhood experiences. We are focused on modes of being in the world. Three Rs: recognition, regret and reorientation. The ego arises out of a misunderstanding of ourselves. God can not be seen, so we believe we are independent. Animal suffering. We exert an influence on animals and they suffer from that influence. What is the best way to help one another and animals? The most powerful way is the prayer of beholding. The prayer is an endeavor of seeing the individual/animal in the context of divine love. Any individual that can old a suffering life form in the context of spiritual reality will have a healing impact, because within the context of divine love, everything is perfect.

The story of Salomon and the angel. “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” How can we be more interested in wisdom than in sex, money, power, and fame? There are two ways, suffering or learning from a guru. Most people suffer and learn nothing. Some suffer too much and so are driven to learn. Problems are lessons designed for our edification. You need not be afraid of your problems. You may even welcome problems, because they bring messages and potential for healing and then an ascension. We are speaking about priorities. Thou shalt have no other interests before the good of God, which is spiritual. Once you establish this priority, you are on the path and you will grow, spiritually. Spirituality is not sensed, to how do we turn toward it? You can’t feel spiritualty, but you can know it. (e.g., beauty, truth, harmony, intelligence, joy, love, freedom). Nothing that can be experienced or which has form or is formless, can possible be real. Reality is spiritual. The building blocks of reality are spiritual values. Our lives, as spiritual beings, are characterized by spiritual qualities. “Spiritual reality is a whole other smoke.” How is transcendence different from rejecting the world? We are in this world but are not of it. Rejection and acceptance indicate involvement with it. Transcendence: rising above/viewing from a higher standpoint, from the context of eternity, infinity, timelessness, spiritual reality. How can the truth of this idea be demonstrated? You experience PAGL. The very best things are often preceded by crises. You sew the seeds in tears and reap them in joy. Anxiety comes from focusing attention on what we want and when we begin speaking, we begin to focus our attention on communication and not on what we want. Metapsychiatry says that we suffer from what we want and what we don’t want. It is normal to want, but it is not existentially valid. You can be liberated from wanting, if you learn to be here for God. Here you focus on what God wants. To be here for God, you must have an existentially valid concept of God. God is the creative principal of the universe. God is love intelligence and God is not here for us, we are here for God. What does life want, what does love want, what does intelligence want? Each wants to manifest itself in the fullness of being. God wants us to manifest omniactive-love-intelligence in the world. “Commit thy way unto the lord and thou shall be established in PAGL.” This is the way to be healed of anxiety and many other problems.

Enlightened man will neither be passive nor aggressive, he will be responsive, intelligently, lovingly responsive to manifest need, from moment to moment. Finding a direct knowledge of God. A beneficial presence, is not a person, it is an individual that manifests spiritual qualities. What makes man a spiritual being? Man has the capacity of becoming consciously aware and developing the faculty to discern and appreciate spiritual values and spiritual qualities. Man’s spiritual nature demands that he become increasingly spiritually minded. A cow is a life form and life is spirit, but we cannot say that a cow is a spiritual being. Man is unique on earth, in that he is a spiritual being. You can respond to invalid aspects of the world. Psychological is purely horizontal and existential/Spiritual is full dimensional. We experience darkness and light, this does not mean that there such a thing as darkness, it is insubstantial and does not exist. Similarly evil does not exist, but it is experienced by man. What is the source of all ignorance in the world? A: Judging by appearances. Judge not by the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. Seeing with righteous judgment is to see by God’s eyes. If we can not judge by experience, what is left to us? The meaning and purpose of life it to come to know reality. Experience is organismic. Realization takes place in consciousness. Where is consciousness? A: It can not be localized, because it is infinite. Metapsychiatry is a positive approach to finding reality via dialectics/juxtaposition. It’s approach sits in contrast to others which work on the basis of elimination of all non-reality.
